Apple Store Briarwood iPhone G3 Excursion
July 14
At 3:30 AM Friday morning (7-11-08), my wife awakened me telling me that it was time for me to wake up to go get my new iPhone 3G. At 3:55 AM Chad knocked on the kitchen door. By 4:20 AM we were on the road to Ann Arbor. We arrived at the Briarwood mall at 5:15 AM. We were the 25th and 26th people in line for the iPhone 3G. At 6:30 AM, mall security moved us inside the mall directly in front of the Apple store. At 7:15 I counted 117 people in line. By 8:00 AM, I'm guesstimating that there were nearly 150 people in line.
Once Apple opened up the store, it took around 5 minutes for us to get through the line and move into the front part of the store. 15 minutes later I left with my 3G iPhone. I received a call about an hour and a half later from someone that had tried to buy an iPhone in Fort Wayne to no avail. They were now on their way to Ann Arbor. By 11:00 AM, they called back and told us that it was taking approximately 4 hours to move from the end of the line into the Apple store. No wonder Apple sold a million phones in 3 days!
Highlights include faster cellular-based internet access, and GPS. As you drive, the GPS icon of you actually moves on the Google Map client. Pretty cool.
Phone reception and signal strength are noticeably better on this phone when compared to the first revision iPhone. I'm guessing that the plastic back on rev. 2 versus the aluminum back of the first iPhone are responsible for this.
If you like your iPhone rev. 1 and don't need faster cellular-based internet, GPS, or better reception, just install the iPhone 2.0 software update and you'll be able to experience the best part of the iPhone 3G rollout. The App Store! Check it out:
