Guest presenter Chris Hamady went over the installation steps for Leopard from start to finish. Using a couple of Mac Books he was able to show the recommended way to install (Archive and Install) and once installed he demoed the new and cool features of Leopard such as Time Machine and spaces.

There was also a discussion about the new transperent dock and how to hack it to make it more like it was in Tiger.

The meeting was lightly attended but we enjoyed the new venue at Books-A-Million and a good time was had by all.

Episode 1

Meeting September 20th, 2005
Wood County ESC

John Mansel-Pleydell and Chris Hamady demonstrated various back-up and hard drive cloning solutions for Mac OS X. Applications included NetRestore, Carbon Copy Cloner, Disk Utility and Apple BackUp. Some of these applications can be found at:

http://www.bombich.com

The group also discussed OS and application troubleshooting. It was suggested that many problems in Mac OS X can be alleviated by removing the cache files found at:

/Library/Caches
/System/Library/Caches
~/Library/Caches

If problems still persist, removing plist files found in ~/Library/Preferences can sometimes be the answer.
(~/ refers to a user's home directory)

A special thank you to Ed Helmlinger of the Wood County Educational Service Center for allowing us to use the ESC facility.

Meeting May 10th, 2005
Wood County ESC

Chris Hamady presented iLife '05 and Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). Chris started off with demo's of iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD. He then moved on to Tiger. He demonstrated Spotlight, Automator and Dashboard. Several attendees added a great deal to the presentation. It was an excellent learning experience for all involved.

Chris was doing his demonstration on a 17 inch Powerbook booting from a Tiger installation that was on his iPod. Here is the procedure that he used to install Tiger onto his iPod:

1. Computer and iPod are both turned on.
2. Put the Tiger installer CD into the computer and shutdown the computer.
3. Connect the iPod to the computer and make sure that the iPod is turned on.
4. Turn on the computer and IMMEDIATELY hold down the "C" key on the keyboard. (This will force the computer to boot into the Tiger installer on the CD)
5. Go through the installation process until you come to the place where you choose the disk to install Tiger onto. Choose the iPod as the destination for the new Tiger install.
6. Follow the directions for the installer and begin the installation. (if you want to keep your music or any pre-existing files on the iPod, I would advise against choosing "Erase and Install."
7. Once the installation is complete, the computer will reboot from the iPod into Tiger.
8. Open up the /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility, click on the iPod in the list on the left and run "Repair Disk Permissions."
9. Once that is done you can close the Disk Utility and use Tiger.
10. When you want to boot from another volume, you can use the Startup Disk control panel (found in System Preferences) to decide which disk to boot from. Should you remove the iPod and want to boot into Tiger again, you can simply connect the iPod to the computer, turn them both on. If the computer boots into 10.3.9, use the Startup Disk control panel to choose the iPod as your boot volume.
